The Constitutional crisis between the president and the courts is happening right now. Republicans are openly and smugly defying judges who insist that the president obey the law. If the president wins, American democracy probably can’t survive.
Courts are how we make sure that everyone is treated fairly. They decide what the law means and how it affects our lives.
But Republicans convict without a trial; they jail without a lawyer; and they threaten to impeach any judge who says this is not OK. Failing that, Republicans now are talking about eliminating some federal district courts whose judges don’t demonstrate the ideological purity that satisfies MAGA (Morons Are Governing America).
Only judges have the power and the duty to pass judgment on what Republicans – ALL Republicans, both elected officials and those who stand silently by – are doing. Now it’s up to the courts to enforce our laws because the president considers himself above the law.
The courts are our last line of defense. We must support them.
Republicans are forcing judges into the arms of Democrats and Independents, and we should embrace them.
This is a good time to organize lunch-hour rallies at courthouses and federal buildings – when judges can see them, if only from a window – to show our local judges that we support them and count on them to uphold the rule of law.
Some of our local organizers are considering this. Encourage them when you can.
Speaking of local organizers…
You no doubt know of several local organizations that are holding protests and rallies and taking affirmative action to reclaim a government of, by, and for the people. Democratic committees come immediately to mind, but there are others.
One local group that made the national news recently is the PA 10th District Network, which concentrates on actions within our 10th Congressional District (now occupied by the infamous traitor Scott Perry). The event was a “Tesla Takedown” at the Tesla dealership on the Carlisle Pike. According to organizer Susan Roller, some 200 people participated. Even better, cars passing by leaned on their horns in support so much that it was hard for people on the picket line to hear each other at times.
Other groups organizing events include:
Indivisible, a national organization with local chapters
PA Stands Up supports local leaders and candidates for office
Turn PA Blue, which focuses on recruiting and supporting Democratic candidates
Bewildered?
Of course.
There is so much going on that it’s hard to keep track of it all. That’s why there’s Mobilize. This national organization is a clearinghouse for local action. Subscribe to their newsletter, and you will receive emails telling you when and where events are occurring near you.
This is no time to be passive – and the weather is only getting better, so enjoy yourself! Who says revolution can’t be fun?
Well said, Tim. Keep up the heat
